What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy. Its aims are to support the individual that would like to change something in their life, it provides a safe space where emotions and thoughts and behaviours can be explored. It can assist people to see their own worth and empower them along the way.

People attend counselling for many different reasons. It maybe something that you need support with whilst trying to overcome a distressing event, or bereavement, loneliness, a health issue such as menopause, relationship breakdown, work related stress or you aren’t even sure what it is, but you know that you are unhappy with your situation and would like to feel better. These are only some examples.

I offer face to face counselling in Chester and online sessions across the UK.

Online counselling

Often people can struggle with traditional face to face therapy for many different reasons including childcare, or access with transport, so the benefit of online therapy can assist with this.

It may be that face to face counselling feels a little overwhelming for you so you’d prefer to be in your own safe space to share your feelings and thoughts at such a delicate time.

Having time online with your counsellor may feel more comfortable for you and more accessible. It may provide more time for you to reflect and work through your experiences.

Initial step

When deciding if counselling is right for you, it can be nerve wracking or overwhelming, you may feel uncertain about it. It is also important the counsellor is the right person for you.

I offer a 15 minute telephone consultation to help you work through any concerns you may have about counselling and offer the opportunity for you to ask any questions prior to any work beginning. During this time, you may or may not wish to go ahead with counselling.

Once you have decided, should you choose to go ahead with counselling, we can agree a suitable day and time together to meet, either face to face or online.

Your first session

During your first session I will ask you to talk about what has brought you to counselling so we can look at what it is you would like from the sessions. There is a possibility you might not know this straight away and that’s okay.

If you would like to continue with more sessions to help you explore your difficulty (s) more, then together we can look at a way forward that is best for you.
